The European Commission issued a warning to Microsoft on FridayoddsofstraightflushThe company must provide information about the risks of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on its search engine Bing within a deadline or face huge fines.
As early as March this year, the European Union asked some technology giants, including Microsoft, to provide information on the systemic risks posed by generative AI tools.
The European Commission said it had not responded after requesting Microsoft in March to provide information on specific risks posed by Bing's generative AI features, particularly (Copy in Bing and Image Creator by Designer).
The European Commission requires Microsoft to provide missing information by May 27. If Microsoft fails to respond within the deadline, the agency may impose a fine of up to 1% of total annual revenue or global annual turnover, and impose a periodic fine of up to 5% of average daily revenue or global average daily turnover.
Microsoft's revenue for the fiscal year 2023 (ending June 30) was 2,119oddsofstraightflush.200 million dollars, so fines could reach billions of dollars.
The EU's enforcement is based on the Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into effect last year, which requires technology companies to take more measures to address illegal and harmful content on their platforms.

The agency said: "Under DSA, designated services, including Bing, must undergo adequate risk assessments and take appropriate risk mitigation measures (DSA Articles 34 and 35). Generative AI risks are one of the risks identified by the committee in its guidance on the integrity of the election process, particularly for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June."
